Featured project: Constructing a brand

A wave of possibilities

I was asked to participate in the creation of a brand for a new television show, that would be showcasing the Central Coast (CA). This was a very exciting project, and in order to execute it correctly I had to think about all the possible applications of the logo. In addition to print design, I had to think of a logo that would translate well to motion graphics in television broadcasting. It's easy to just add a couple of filters and plugins to a logo for animation and call it a day, but I wanted to design something that would create a real visual style for the show.

Creating Central Coast Wave

The client said he didn't want any obvious wave or water images, so I really had to think of differnt meanings of the word wave. Here is an unused proposal for the logo>> Unused Logo CCWWhile the client liked the elegance, and clean lines of the logo, it ultimately didn't fit the feel the show was going for. It evoked a more corporate image than the show's fun premise. Instead we all agreed on using the rather quirky custom wave type with a hand symbol. The hand connotes various uses of the word wave, as the show was basically giving a shout out to the central coast. The fingers were also curved to give a slight wave feel, and the icon of the wave was added to make the mark more iconic.

After creating the logo, now came the really fun part. I was asked to create a show intro, and other graphic elements to create a cohesive brand experience for the show. Using the motif of the hand and fingers, I came up with the concept of this wave created from the fingers sweeping across the central coast. These elements could be used in other parts of the show for transitional and graphics logo bumps.

While the show is still in development here is a demo for the show's intro: Creating Central Coast Wave
